Fully Alive: Integrating Positive Education into Our Catholic Schools

Currently, our education system is experiencing some of the highest rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidality that it has ever seen among students. While our Catholic schools excel at transmitting knowledge, we have struggled to simultaneously foster our students' psychological and emotional well-being. These psychological/emotional struggles not only impede academic and vocational pursuits but also have significant consequences for students' spiritual lives. This presentation seeks to introduce educators to positive psychology, a field concerned with happiness and well-being. Further, it offers insights on ways principles from positive psychology can be intentionally and thoughtfully integrated into Catholic education in order to cultivate a culture of well-being among our students. Educators will learn some of the exercises and interventions used in positive psychology as well as be provided with resources for further exploration of the topic.
